Madison, WI - March 1970. On March 15, 1970, the University of Wisconsin - Madison Teaching Assistants' Association voted to strike, and the campus was filled with picket lines as well as demonstrations of related and other issues. The strike lasted until early April, when the Association and University came to an agreement. Here, a wooden tripod with an oil-stained paper lettered "Esso"—still a trading name for Exxon/Mobil outside the U.S.—is set on fire on the campus. Protests in 1969 and 1970 included protests against Dow, GE, and oil companies, and protesters saw the crowds at the TAA strike as opportunities.
